Daniel Altmaier was a semi-finalist here five years ago, but hasn't made it past round two since. The 27-year-old has reached two ATP Tour clay court quarter-finals this year in Bucharest and Hamburg. One Challenger Tour final has also been reached on this surface.
He really blows hot and cold as Altmaier has suffered 13 first round exits this year, five on clay. He was beaten in the second round in Bastad last week,losing to eventual runner-up Luciano Darderi. Altmaier has lost three of his last four on clay.
