We're guaranteed a German player progressing to round three of the Miami Open. 24th seed Jan-Lennard Struff takes on unseeded Daniel Altmaier in this outdoor hard court Masters 1000 tournament. Up next for the winner is a match against either ninth seed Alex de Minaur or unseeded Kwon Soon-Woo . Struff has twice reached the third round in Miami in 2017 and 2021. The German is 26th in the live rankings but down at 92nd in the live rankings. Struff hasn't made it past the last 16 of any tournaments this year. He got to that stage in Hong Kong and Rotterdam. His latest tournament was at Indian Wells where he beat Borna Coric in his first match before losing to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. He's had one previous match with Altmaier losing to him in 2020 but that was on clay.

Altmaier had failed to make it past the first round here in three previous tournaments. He finally made it into round two with a straight sets win over qualifier Harold Mayot. That win has taken him up to 50th in the live rankings. The German has also sruggled this year and was outside the top 100 in the Live ATP Race before this Masters 1000 event. He did start the year well with a quarter final in Auckland but had to retire against Arthur Fils after losing the first set. That was the first of four successive defeats for Altmaier. He got to the last 16 in Acapulco but lost in round one at Indian Wells. We tip Struff to beat his compatriot.
