A crucial game four in the Western Conference playoffs first round sees the Dallas Mavericks looking to take a commanding 3-1 lead over the LA Clippers. The Mavs have raced out to an early 2-1 advantage in the series after wins in games two and three. Their most recent outing saw their defense steal the show as they neutralized the Clippers’ starpower to secure a 101-90 victory. In fact, the Mavericks have their defense to thank for their current lead as they are playing well above the 115.3 adjusted defensive rating (ranked 18th in the league) achieved in the regular season. There is a worry for the Mavs, however, as superstar Luka Doncic injured his knee in the first half of game three. Doncic was able to finish out the rest of the game, although the injury was likely a big factor as to why he shot just 28% from the field and 23% from three-point range.

There were a number of red flags for Los Angeles in the 101-90 loss in their last outing. First of all, they were able to limit Luka Doncic to a poor shooting night (7-25 from the field, 3-13 from three), yet they weren’t able to capitalize with a victory. Second, the duo of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard combined for just 16 points in 55 minutes of court time. Leonard has stated that he was negatively affected by his right knee after the 32-year-old missed just over three weeks prior to this series. He told reporters that he wants to play in game four but it remains to be seen how effective he will be. The Clippers now come into this matchup having recorded just a single win over their last six games. They should be looking at this as a must-win spot as teams down 3-1 have come back to win the series only 13 times in the history of the NBA.
