The Dallas Mavericks face elimination as they host the Golden State Warriors at the American Airlines Center and will attempt to do what no other team in NBA history has been able to achieve by coming back from a 3-0 series deficit. 146 times in the NBA’s 75-year history have teams been in the Mavs position and all 146 times they have failed to complete the comeback and win the series. In fact, on only three occasions has a team been able to force a game seven after being down 3-0 meaning history is certainly against Dallas in this one. However, just looking at game four there are reasons to believe the Mavericks can at least avoid the sweep and send the series back to San Francisco for game five. Superstar Luka Doncic has continued his otherworldly playoff performance with back-to-back 40 point games and the Mavs know they can rely on his consistent scoring. It’s the role-players that will likely be the deciding factor in this game and whether or not they can knock down their open looks.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd must emphasize to his team to focus solely on game four and take things one step at a time. This is a resilient Dallas team, as shown by the 3-2 series comeback over the top-seeded Suns in the previous series, so there shouldn’t be concerns over their motivation for this game. Golden State would of course prefer to close this series out as soon as possible to maximize their rest before the Finals start but this does present a possible let-down spot for them. It’s human nature that the Warriors might mentally let their foot off the gas a bit, given the security blanket of such a dominant series lead and the allure of closing things out in front of their home fans in a potential game five. With their backs against the wall, look for the home team to come out strong in front of what should be an energetic crowd.
