Sixth seed Jasmine Paolini will have the home fans cheering her on in the Italian Open final. The Italian faces Cori Gauff in the final of this outdoor clay court tournament. Here's our match prediction.
Raffaeela Reggi is the last Italian woman to win this tournament. That was back in 1985 and forty years later, Jasmine Paolini aims to end the long wait for another home win. The world number five has never won a clay court singles tournament.
This is her third clay court final and the other two ended in defeat. That includes last year's French Open final. The 29-year-old has been in top form in this tournament with wins including Jelena Ostapenko, Ons Jabeur and Diane Shnaider.and only one set being lost.
Cori Gauff is in her second successive clay court final. The American also reached the title decider in Madrid but lost to Sabalenka. Gauff ileads Paolini 2-1 in previous meetings but their only match on clay was in Stuttgart this year with the Italian winning.
It's not been an easy route to the final for her with two matches going to a final set. That includes her semi-final when having to come from behind to beat Qinwen Zheng. Only one clay court title has been won by her and that was in 2021.
