A run of four successive defeats has not been the kind of start that Celtic’s new coach Wilfried Nancy was looking for. Celtic are second in the Scottish Premiership and will aim to end their poor run with a home win over sixth-placed Aberdeen. Read our match prediction below.
A win for Hearts over Rangers earlier on Sunday afternoon would see Celtic fall nine points behind the league leaders. Midweek saw them take the lead at Dundee United but eventually lose 2-1. With their next two league games being played away from home and then a home Old Firm derby, Celtic need to get three points on Sunday.
Aberdeen are eight points behind Celtic and have won their last two league fixtures. As you will read in the form section of this preview, they have certainly had a mixed season when playing away from home in the Scottish Premiership this season. Celtic - Aberdeen: Form Analysis
Two cup losses and a couple of league defeats have sent Celtic into a December crisis. They looked like winning at Dundee United in midweek but gave away their lead and eventually lost after conceding two goals in three minutes after the break.
That defeat followed a vital 2-1 home loss to Hearts just as the league leaders seemed to be struggling themselves. Three goals were conceded in their Europa League home loss to AC Roma and then they lost the Scottish League Cup final 3-1 to St Mirren.
The loss to Hearts is their only home defeat in the Scottish Premiership this season with six of the other seven games being won. Both teams have scored in four of their last six matches in all competitions.
Aberdeen are on a winning run on their travels.
Aberdeen began the season with three successive away defeats. They have turned that around though and come to Celtic Park looking to make it five successive away league victories. Their most recent away win saw them defeat Dundee 3-1.
The visitors are unbeaten in their last seven league games, last being beaten at home by Hibs in October. A form guide for the last ten Scottish Premiership games has Aberdeen top of the table with five points more than Celtic. Celtic & Aberdeen Squad Analysis
For once, Celtic will want their great rivals Rangers to avoid defeat on Sunday. They travel to leaders Hearts earlier in the afternoon and coming away with at least a point would be the best news Celtic have had in a while.
Long absentee list for Celtic.
Their last four games have all been lost, two in the Scottish Premiership. It's a run that must be turned around by their new coach as soon as possible. To make their task more difficult, they will be missing both Jota and Alistair Johnson on Sunday. There are also doubts about several other players including Callum Osmond and Kelechi Iheanacho who both have hamstring injuries while Sebastian Tounekti and Michel Balikwisha are on international duty in Africa.
It's all about confidence for Celtic at present and they must avoid a fifth straight defeat.
Aberdeen have finally worked out how to get away wins. They have won their last four in the Scottish Premiership, three being won 1-0 before the 3-1 victory at Dundee. Keeping a clean sheet at Celtic Park isn't something they have been doing in recent seasons.
Their absentee list is briefer than that of their opponents with only Gavin Molloy definitely ruled out of this trip to Celtic Park. They do have injury doubts over Kristers Tobers and Ante Palaversa.
