Caroline Garcia, 23rd seed, will seek another win over the unseeded Viktoriya Tomova when they square off next in Miami. The two will battle in the second round with the winner playing either Naomi Osaka or Elina Svitolina next. Caroline Garcia has struggled to get a hold of her season and has lost more matches than she has won. She has compiled a 6-7 record. One of her wins however was against Tomova two weeks ago at Indian Wells. It remains to be her most recent victory and she will be confident of managing another win here. Garcia made the fourth round in Miami in 2019 but has since never been able to go past the second round. The three-time WTA 1000 event champion has moved up two places to 25th in the live ranking.

Viktoriya Tomova has also battled with inconsistency and currently has compiled a 9-9 record. All but one of her 18 fixtures have been played on hard courts. The Bulgarian tied her record thanks to her first-round victory over Tamara Korpatsch. She won in straight sets, dropping six games to the lucky loser. Tomova has never won multiple matches at a WTA 1000 tournament. She has never gone past the second round at such events and will be eager to end this unconvincing run here. The 29-year-old has also only once this season played past the second round in seven tournaments participated in. This was in Hobart where she made it to the quarterfinals. She is currently ranked 74th in the live ranking.
