Matchday six in the Premier League sees 14th-place Sunderland host third-placed Brighton in this Saturday afternoon kickoff at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats come into this match missing two of their most important players, while the Seagulls arrive in blistering form as the league’s top-scoring side. Our prediction, therefore, sides with the visitors to carry on their momentum in the North of England.
Sunderland will be hoping for a much-needed jolt in front of their home fans after back-to-back league defeats left them on four points and just one above the relegation zone. They haven’t had much success against Brighton lately, failing to win either of last season’s meetings and not having beaten the coastal side since a 2-0 Championship win in October 2004.
The Seagulls, meanwhile, have been soaring to start the 2026-27 campaign. Their 10-point haul so far has them five off leaders Man City and two behind second-placed Arsenal, whom they beat 3-0 just before the break. Fabian Hurzeler’s side have won their last three games in all competitions and will be aiming to repeat last season’s 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light, their first on Wearside in over four decades.

Sunderland - Brighton: Form Analysis
Sunderland were involved in one of the wildest games of the season so far when they lost 5-3 to Man City away at the Etihad just before the international break. Despite that scoreline, Sunderland could easily have taken something from the match.
They generated 3.57 xG (to City’s 2.82) and an incredible eight clear-cut scoring chances, while also having a dubious handball penalty shout go against them.
After taking four points from their opening three league fixtures, Sunderland have now lost their last two straight EPL fixtures, albeit against last season’s champions Arsenal and runners-up Man City.
Sunderland ended a 53-year wait for European football with a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar.
It marked a successful return for the Black Cats, who kicked off their Europa League campaign with three points thanks to Enzo Le Fée’s penalty in the second half.
Brighton have been one of the most fascinating stories to kick off the 2026-27 season. Manager Fabian Hürzeler has the Seagulls playing some brilliant stuff, which culminated in a pair of famous victories.
Brighton came back from 2-0 down at Old Trafford to beat United 3-2 in the EFL Cup, and then followed that up three days later with a shock 3-0 win over Arsenal. The visitors have now won their last three games in all competitions and are the top-scoring side in the Premier League with 16 goals.

Sunderland & Brighton Squad Analysis
Régis Le Bris has built Sunderland into a disciplined, compact and organised side over the last two seasons, with a strong, physical presence in both penalty boxes a big part of that identity.
Unfortunately for the hosts, they will be without two of their most important players in that respect, as centre-back Dan Ballard and striker Brian Brobbey are both ruled out with hamstring injuries picked up on international duty.
Ballard is dominant in the air and a massive set-piece threat, while Brobbey showed what a handful he can be by bullying Rúben Dias and scoring a hat-trick against Man City last time out. Habib Diarra and Romaine Mundle are also out, with Wilson Isidor expected to lead the line.
Pascal Gross leads the EPL in chances created (15) and ranks second in big chances created (4).
At 35, Gross is aging like a fine wine. The German is central to everything Brighton does, dictating play from deep and carrying a big influence from set pieces. He has three goals and three assists in the league and has played every minute so far, while Charalampos Kostoulas has three goals and one assist in his last three appearances.
Fabian Hurzeler’s achievements are made even more impressive by an injury list of 11 players, including Yankuba Minteh, Stefanos Tzimas, Pascal Struijk and Evan Ferguson. Lewis Dunk is back in training, while Kaoru Mitoma, Jack Hinshelwood and Yasin Ayari will be assessed before kickoff.

Our Sunderland vs Brighton Prediction
While Sunderland will get a boost from the home crowd at the Stadium of Light, plenty is working against the Black Cats here. They are without arguably their most important defender, as well as their starting number nine, who scored a hat-trick in his last club appearance.
Brighton come into this matchup in fine form, winning their last three in all competitions, including two hugely impressive victories over Manchester United and Arsenal. With the level the visitors have shown so far this season, it’s tough to look past them. Our Sunderland vs Brighton prediction: Brighton wins.
