Brentford have been doing well in recent matches and will be very confident as they switch from league assignments, to focus on the League Cup, where they host Newcastle United in the quarter finals on Tuesday. The Championship side hasn’t lost any of the last 13 matches and head here straight from a 3-1 win over Reading. Despite playing in a lower league, Brentford will not be awed by playing a top flight side; they have eliminated three Premier League teams already in this season’s League Cup. They beat Fulham 3-0, eliminated West Bromwich Albion on post match spot kicks after a 2-2 draw and dumped out Southampton with a 2-0 win. With two clean sheets and having scored two or more in the three League Cup matches, Brentford will approach this game very high in confidence. Said Benrahma, who scored twice against Fulham in their last League Cup game, has already left for a loan stint at West Ham United. He will not be missed though, as a new star has come up, in Ivan Toney – the current top scorer in the Championship with 16 goals. Toney arrived from League One side Peterborough United, where he scored 24 goals last season and he has shown he has what it takes for a higher league. What would make him crucial for this game though, is that he spent three seasons as a fringe player at Newcastle United, and only played 10 minutes across his stint there. He left St. James Park in 2017 and this reunion coming when he has scored thrice in the last five matches will excite him.

Brentford have been good in defence just as they’ve been in attack. This season in the Championship, they are the third best attacking side, with 31 goals, meanwhile, they have conceded two or more goals in just one of their last 13 matches. However, they have just sic clean sheets in the last 15 matches. At home, this season, they have just one loss – to Preston North End. Newcastle United on the other hand, have no win in their last two matches and have conceded seven goals in their last three matches. They have one clean sheet in 12 matches but have failed to score in only three of the last 15 matches they’ve played. The Magpies have scored two or more goals in six of their last 15 matches and conceded two or more goals in five of the last 15. It hasn’t been very rosy away from home though; they have one win in the last four away matches and just a clean sheet in the last six. In the three earlier rounds of the League Cup, Newcastle United beat Blackburn Rovers, Morecambe and Newport County. This is going to be their toughest game yet in the competition but will be hoping they can maintain their record against Brentford, having won in the only two meetings between them. In the two meetings, in the Championship in 2016/17, Dwight Gayle scored thrice and having just returned from injury, will be hoping to extend his form against Brentford.
