Top seed Ben Shelton takes on unseeded Brandon Nakashima in the US Clay Court Championships quarter finals. The potential seeded opponents in the last four are fourth seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry and the eighth seed Max Purcell. Shelton is the world number 16 and a couple of more wins in Houston will take him up to 15th and equal his career high. The American beat unseeded Zizou Bergs in his first match this week but had to work hard to do so. He dropped the first set but fought back well to win the next two but the match lasted 145 minutes. Clay courts aren't his strongest surface and he hasn't got a good record and his only apperance at Roland Garros saw him lose in round one. He did get to a semi-final in a Challenger Tour event but he's far better on hard courts.

Brandon Nakashima has had to win two matches to reach the last eight in Houston. He's been consistent as both of his wins over Duje Adjukovic and Rinky Hijikata were won 6-1 6-4. The American began this ATP 250 tournament ranked 92nd but is up to 86th in the live rankings. He has previously reached the third round at Roland Garros and made it to the last four of the Lyon clay court tournament last year. That's enough good form on this surface to convince us he can win at least one set in this match.
