The Mall of Asia Arena plays host to the San Miguel Beermen as they look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they take on winless Northport Batang Pier for this Governors’ Cup matchup in the PBA. San Mig fell in a close contest against Converge FiberXers in their last outing, resulting in a 107-103 loss. The defeat snapped the Beermen’s five game winning streak to start the Governors’ Cup campaign and has them sitting third in the standings, tied with two other teams that also sit on 5-1 records. They’ll have to keep their focus here as the players might be distracted with a huge upcoming matchup against rivals Barangay Ginebra coming up just two days after this contest. However, the loss is likely to provide a jolt to coach Jorge Gallent’s San Miguel team as the Philippine Cup champions continue their search for their first Governors’ Cup title since the 2014-15 season. 

Standing in their way is a Batang Pier side in desperate need of a win as they risk potentially putting themselves completely out of the playoff picture with a loss here. The players should be accustomed to this type of situation, however, as Northport Batang Pier also suffered a 0-5 start in last year’s Governors’ Cup tournament, to ultimately turn things around in a late season push for the playoffs. This is a big ask however, as they will now have to contend with one of the best teams in the division and one of the favorites to lift the cup. Star player Robert Bolick will have to produce a big performance yet again after returning with a 30 point performance in Batang Pier’s most recent game, a 115-100 loss to Barangay Ginebra.
