Third seed Barbora Krejcikova is through to the second round in Athens, where she is set to take on the unseeded Carole Monnet. Krejcikova has won four of her last five matches, and our prediction tips her to advance here.

The winner of this first career meeting will face Qinwen Zheng or Elena Micic for a place in the semi-finals. Krejcikova won in straight sets against Viktorija Tomova in the first round.

It was a strong performance from a player who has grown in confidence in recent weeks. The Czech star struggled at the start of the season but has since compiled a 16-8 record, with 12 of those wins coming in her last 17 outings.

Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, is the WTA world number 32.

Carole Monnet had a much more eventful first-round tie than Krejcikova. The Frenchwoman took almost three hours to get past Rebeka Masarova.

The Spaniard took the first set and then was stubborn in the decider, which Monnet won 12-10 on a tiebreak. That performance highlighted in some ways the form that Monnet has been in so far this season.

The 24-year-old has lost more matches than she has won, compiling a 13-19 record and winning just three times on hard courts. Advancing to this round has given Monnet a significant boost in the live ranking as she is up 11 places to 194.
