The USA have dominated women’s basketball for a fair while now. They have won four of the last five World Cups and the last six Summer Olympics. They haven’t lost since 2015 and their last six matches against Australia have all resulted in wins for the Americans. There have been a few matches in this tournament that have perhaps been a bit closer than they might have liked but they still look the best team in the world. Wins have come against Senegal by 20 points, a 12-point win over China and a 26-point defeat of Lativa to confirm top spot in the group. The quarter final saw them face surprise contenders Nigeria winnng easily by 31 points and then a 16-point defeat of the other surprise team in this tournament Belgium.

Australia have also won all five of their games but had a real struggle to get past hosts Spain in the semi-finals. They trailed by nine points going into the final quarter but fought back to win the final quarter 22-8 to get through to this final. Liz Cambage is the top scorer in this World Cup, scoring 48 points more than any other player and if she’s on top form, this could be a close final.  The USA beat Australia on the majority of the major stats and with their experience of winning finals, they can win another trophy.
