Canada and Australia are set to meet in Group B of the women’s basketball segment at the 2024 Olympic Games. Australia are third in the group, level on points with fourth-placed Canada. Here’s a look at the stats ahead of this match, and a prediction.

Three-time silver medalists Australia began their campaign with defeat. They were outgunned 75-62 by Nigeria and will be targeting an immediate response. The Opals have qualified for the knockout stages ever since making their Summer Games debut in 1984.

They are still favourites to make it out of Group B and earn a podium finish. Sandy Brondello’s team has however struggled in most recent fixtures, claiming just two wins in their last seven games. Against Nigeria, they shot 43% from the field and 40% from three. Alanna Smith led the team with 15 points and was one of three players with at least 11 points. Australia have won the last eight matchups with Canada.

Two of Australia’s eight wins over Canada were achieved at the 2012 and 2000 Summer Games. Canada have also defeated Australia at the Olympics. One of their four wins in this fixture came at the 1984 Games, a tournament they finished fourth in.

Canada, who are making their eighth Olympics appearance, have never reached such heights again. Like Australia, Team Canada also began their campaign in Paris with defeat. Victor Lapena’s players were undone 75-54 by hosts France.

Their 54-point tally was the lowest of all the first-round group matches. The two-time FIBA World Cup bronze medalists shot 44% from the field and connected just eight times in 29 attempts from three. Kia Nurse and Shay Colley led the team with 11 points each and were the only players with double-digit points.
