Third seed Naomi Osaka begins her week in Washington against wildcard Ashlyn Krueger in the second round. This is their second meeting in the last two seasons. Our prediction here favors Osaka, having won eight of her last 10 outings.

Krueger defeated Osaka when they first met back in 2024 in Cincinnati and will hope to rise to the occasion once again. The American ended a three-week break from action this week, picking up from where she left at the start of July.

Krueger, who went into that break having lost just once in 12 matches, defeated Katie Boulter in the first round. She won in three sets to record her 28th win of the season and move up 11 places to 56th in the live ranking.

Naomi Osaka was going through a difficult spell when she faced off with Krueger two seasons ago. She had just spent the previous campaign off the tennis court on maternity leave and was struggling.

Now, she is almost back to the form that made her a four-time Grand Slam champion and world number one. As a result, she is tipped to challenge for this week’s title.

Osaka is making her first appearance since a quarter-final finish at Wimbledon, her best-ever run at SW19. Following an exciting grass season that also had her finish as runner-up at Bad Homburg, Osaka is back in the WTA top 20 at position 16.
