Eighth seed Arthur Fils and the unseeded Dusan Lajovic will square off in the first round of the Argentina Open. The winner will then play either Yannick Hanfmann or Alejandro Tabilo for a place in the quarterfinals. Arthur Fils is having a strong start to the season and will hope this doesn't change as he makes the switch to clay. The young Frenchman has compiled a 6-3 record playing on outdoor hard courts. He has reached at least the quarterfinals in two of the three tournaments he has participated in. His best result so far was in Auckland where he produced a semifinal finish. Fils was last on the court three weeks ago at the Australian Open where he exited in the second round. The 19-year-old defeated Lajovic on clay last season in their only other encounter. He is currently down one place to 36th in the live ranking.

Dusan Lajovic is returning to Buenos Aires for the ninth time. In three of his previous eight appearances, he has made the quarterfinals including last season. The Serb, who is having a poor start to the year, will hope to at the very least defend last year’s points. Lajovic has played four matches thus far and has managed just one victory. This was his first match of the year in the first round in Adelaide. He has lost three in a row since then with one of those defeats coming on a clay surface. The 33-year-old is currently ranked 53rd in the ATP and is coming off a Davis Cup upset. Lajovic is a strong performer on clay and has won almost 300 matches on the surface in his career.
