The Hungarian Grand Prix culminates this weekend with two semi-finals. The first is between Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Both players have tournament predictions to progress into the semi-finals, with neither player playing a single easy match en route.
Belarusian Sasnovich has put some indifferent recent form behind her to win through three rounds in Hungary. Defeating second seed Viktoriya Tomova in her first-round contest 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. A second-round win over last year's champion, Maria Timofeeva, followed 6-3,6-4, but she was once again tested in the quarterfinal before coming through 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 against Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands.
Her opponent, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova was a winner in Parma in May and has continued that good form here. However, she has lost the first set in all three of her matches so far. In the first round, she defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. She faced fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second round, coming through 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. It was a similar story in the quarterfinal against Elina Avanesyan as Schmiedlova came out on top in three sets once again 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
These players do have a relatively extensive history having played each other seven times previously. Sasnovich holds a big advantage in the head to head, winning six of those seven encounters. That includes the last four consecutive matches between the two, all of which have been on clay and the last of which was just a couple of months back at the Italian Open in Rome.
However, Sasnovich has not won a tournament since 2014, while Schmiedlova won earlier this year in Parma.
Whoever wins this semi-final will face either top seed Diana Shnaider or Eva Lys in the final on Sunday.
