World number 28 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will square off with world number 36 Paula Badosa in the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals. Their second meeting in 2024 will produce a winner to play Jessica Pegula or Leylah Fernandez in the semis. Here’s our preview and prediction of the match.

Pavlyuchenkova beat Qinwen Zheng in straight sets to get here. After a shaky start to her campaign in Cincinnati, she has won her last two matches in straights.

The win over Zheng moved her to 26th in the live ranking. It also saw her reach the last eight in Cincinnati for the first time since 2015. The Russian is a former semi-finalist in this WTA 1000 event but not since 2010 has she advanced that far.

Pavlyuchenkova has compiled a 24-17 record with 17 of her wins being registered on hard courts.

Paula Badosa has equaled her best-ever result in Cincinnati by reaching the quarters, a feat she achieved on her debut in 2021.

The Spaniard has been in excellent form since the season switched to hard courts. She has nine wins in her last 10 matches. This form yielded a title in Washington, her first tour title in two years.

A former Indian Wells champion, Badosa has secured half of her four tour titles in the USA. In her current form, she will be confident of securing another hardcourt title in the US. Badosa, who has moved up six places to 31st in the live ranking, is yet to lose a set this week.

She defeated Yulia Putintseva in the last round by the loss of eight games.
