Algeria have an easy task as they begin their group matches at the Africa Cup of Nations against minnows Zimbabwe. While the Algerians have played at this stage of the tournament 16 times before, Zimbabwe are in playing in it this year for only their third time in history. Enroute to the finals, Zimbabwe had to overcome competition from Swaziland, Guinea and Malawi. They ended up winning three, drawing two and losing one of the six played matches. The Desert Warriors, on the other hand, advanced after edging out Ethiopia, Seychelles and Lesotho in the qualification matches.In total Algeria won five and drew one of their six matches. Zimbabwe Coach Callisto Pasuwa had selection issues when identifying the squad of players to feature for his side in the tournament and he ended up sending in the list after the deadline had passed, subjecting himself to a $2000 fine. All the midfielders and strikers he finally named in the 23-man list ply their trade outside the country, perhaps an indication of the strategic process he had to pursue. His counterpart from Algeria George Leekens had an easier time and with a broad spectrum to choose from, picked 16 players from European leagues and six from teams in various African countries. One of his selected players, Baghdad Bounedjah, plays his club football in Qatar.
