Not since 2018 has a player successfully defended the Mubadala Citi DC Open title. Top seed Alex de Minaur is hoping to equal that feat and faces unseeded Brandon Nakashima in the quarter finals.He beat Nakashima here last year and our prediction is de Minaur will repeat that result..
It was at this stage last year that these two players met in this outdoor hard court tournament. De Minaur won that 6-4 6-4 and went on to win the title. Overall, Nakashima leads de Minaur 2-1 in previous matches but his wins were on different surfaces.
So far in his defence of this ATP 500 tournament, de Minaur has beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets and then defeated qualifier Cruz Hewitt for the loss of only five games. In the last four, the winner will take on either third seed Taylor Fritz or unseeded Alex Michelsen.
Brandon Nakashima was 33rd in the latest rankings, 27 places below his Australian opponent. Nakashima has a 21-14 record this year. To reach the last eight, he has defeated unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets, but needed three to defeat the seventh seeded Jakub Mensik in round two.
The American has reached one ATP Tour outdoor hard court final this year, doing so in Brisbane.
