Ekaterina Alexandrova starts her charge in Monterrey as the second seed, facing Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round. This first match on hard courts between the two represents their second career meeting. We have a prediction below.

Tomljanovic beat Renata Zarazua in three sets to set up this clash. She recovered from losing the opening set and will now be looking to level her head-to-head performance against Alexandrova.

Her record for the season is, however, a shaky 20-18, and she’s lost half of her last 10 games. The first-round win has her at 73rd in the live rank, her best run this season being reaching the Austin and Rabat semis. Tomljanovic was a quarter-finalist here in 2018.

Alexandrova reached the semi-final here last year and will be looking to surpass that in only her second appearance. Ranked a career-high 14th, the Russian got a bye to this round, and she’ll be gunning for her second title this year.

The 30-year-old won the Linz gong, playing in her only final this year. She comes into this game with a great record in second-round matches, having won 11 of 16. Her only meeting with Tomljanovic was six years ago on grass, in Eastbourne.

This is a chance to rise after her fourth-round loss in Cincinnati. She goes into the match placed 14th in the live rankings.
