Third-place Leeds United host fourth-placed Southampton at Elland Road on Saturday to wrap up the 2023/24 Championship campaign. Both clubs were relegated from the Premier League last season yet only one will have the possibility to return with the two teams facing down the promotion playoffs. Leeds trail second-place Ipswich Town by three points. They’ll need the relegated Huddersfield to pull off a massive upset win against the Tractor Boys if they are to leapfrog them for an automatic promotion spot. Leeds will also have to take care of business in front of their home fans and secure the full three points if they are to have any chance of a second-place finish. Southampton saw their hopes at automatic promotion to the Premier League go up in smoke in the last few weeks of the Championship season. The Saints lost their last three matches on the trot following an encouraging winning streak of three games. The result leaves Southampton locked into fourth-place with their 84 points putting them six behind Leeds and 11 ahead of Norwich. They’ll now have to pass through the gauntlet of the promotion playoffs if they are to earn an automatic promotion back to English football’s top flight. It would do their confidence a world of good to earn a win against their main playoff competition to close out the Championship campaign. Russell Martin’s side have been decent on the road, posting a 10-6-6 record in 22 matches. However, Southampton have really struggled to get results in their recent away trips as they are winless in their last four on the road, losing three and managing just a single draw.
