If Roma fans hoped that Bayer Leverkusen would take their foot off the accelerator pedal having already won the Bundesliga title, then those hopes were dashed at the weekend. After their 2-0 win in Rome last week, Leverkusen traveled to sixth-place Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Sunday and produced a scintillating performance. It resulted in a thumping 5-1 victory. In the Europa League, Leverkusen have played eleven games, winning nine, drawing two. They have scored 29 goals in those games, conceding just eight. Xabi Alonso's team are now 48 games unbeaten in all competitions this season. That leaves them just five more games (two in the Bundesliga, two in the Europa League and one in the German DFB Pokal Cup Final) from completing what would be a remarkable achievement of avoiding defeat in every single match that they participated in.
AS Roma lies sixth in Serie A, level on 60 points with Atalanta, but having played a game more than the Bergamo-based side. With Serie A likely to land a fifth Champions League spot next season, Roma will certainly have one eye on the battle in Serie A, especially given the situation in this tie following their first leg defeat. De Rossi's team have gone three games without a win. Drawing at Napoli, losing at home to Leverkusen and then drawing 1-1 with Juventus at the weekend. Bayer Leverkusen came into this game with a clean bill of health and with no players in danger of missing the final through landing a second yellow card. The German Champions will be delighted to have Czech star Adam Hlozek back in action and in such great form after he produced a fabulous display of assists in the 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend. Florian Wirtz, the young German midfielder and Spanish full back Alejandro Grimaldo have been two of Leverkusen's star performers in what has been a stellar season for the team.
There's not too many positives for AS Roma boss Daniele De Rossi heading into this game. However, one is that he should have a full-strength squad to pick from for the tie.
