Werder Bremen and Augsburg have the chance to keep their European ambitions alive when they face off in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The two are five points apart, Augsburg on 39 points in eighth place while Werder Bremen are 11th on 34 points. There is a chance Bundesliga might get up to eight slots for Europe next season so these two sides have all to play for. Before that is confirmed, finishing sixth will be a top target for most of the teams outside the top-six. With four matches to go, eighth placed Augsburg are just six points off the top six. Augsburg’s own quest for a place in Europe took a dent in their last game, a 3-1 loss at Eintracht Frankfurt. That was their second defeat in three matches and they’ve won once in four games. This recent run has been a far cry from the good times between February and March when they won four of five league games. The fact that they have just one clean sheet in the last five matches will also be a concern. They’ve however scored in all of their last eight matches. Augsburg failed to score once in their last 13 matches, a run in which both teams scored in nine.

Werder Bremen will be eyeing a double over Augsburg following their 2-0 win in the reverse fixture in December. That win brought an end to a three-game losing run against Augsburg. A 2-1 win over Stuttgart last time out was a major shocker in that match-week and Werder Bremen will be looking to build on it. The win was their first in eight outings and just the needed response after earlier losing 5-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. One area Werder Bremen will be proud of is their scoring run. They have failed to score in just two of their last 17 matches. However, they have just one clean sheet in their last 10 matches, a depiction of their weaknesses in defence. Of their last 10 matches, Werder Bremen conceded more than a goal in six games. At the start of the year Werder Bremen did enjoy away trips, winning three straight games. However, that has since dissipated, and they are winless in the last four away matches ahead of this. In three of their last four away matches, they suffered defeats.
