A quarter-final spot is on the line when the United States meet Belgium at Lumen Field! This is the matchup USA fans will have been waiting for as they look to get revenge for the heartbreaking loss at the hands of Belgium in 2014. This time around though, it's the USA that comes in as the favourites.

USA and Belgium set for rematch 12 years later

The Americans will be looking to capitalise on their home field advantage when they take on Belgium in Seattle for the 2026 World Cup Round of 16. This pits two teams that have history in this tournament against each other once more. In 2014, USA legend Tim Howard pulled off a 16-save performance (World Cup record) to keep his side in the match. However, it was the Red Devils that ultimately walked away with a 2-1 extra time victory. Now, they face off once more in a Round of 16 clash, although there's a very different feel about this one. For the hosts: a first quarter-final appearance since 2002. For Belgium: a chance to prove they're more than a team in transition after their unfulfilled golden generation.

How they got here

The United States put forward a highly-impressive and professional showing in the group stage, locking up top spot after their 2-0 Matchday 2 victory over Australia. Their Round of 32 match against Bosnia & Herzegovina was full of drama. The USA took a first half lead through Folarin Balogun after a poacher’s finish, before the Monaco man was shown a straight red card after battling for a loose ball and coming down awkwardly on the Bosnian player’s ankle. The Americans were able to hold on though, wrapping things up by curling a free kick over the wall and into the net in the 82nd minute. USA would receive even more good news as Balogun’s red card was officially rescinded, making him eligible to play in the Round of 16.

Belgium, on the other hand, have had a much less comfortable and a considerably more chaotic path. Rudi Garcia’s side managed only a single goal in their first two group stage matches against Egypt and Iran, before finally clicking into gear in a 5-1 beatdown of New Zealand to finish top of the group. Belgium would then pull off one of the great comebacks in World Cup history, trailing 2-0 against Senegal heading into the final four minutes of regular time. Lukaku would pull a goal back in the 86’ before Tielemans bravely headed home the equaliser just three minutes later. Tielemans would be the hero again in extra time, rifling home a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time to seal the win.

USA in the ascendency, Belgium in transition

USA's Mauricio Pochettino

This matchup presents an interesting contrast between two nations seemingly headed in different directions. The United States are very much a team on the rise. Their manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has been with the squad since 2024 and has moulded them into his high-intensity, press-heavy style of play.

The core of the team is either in or approaching their prime years; Pulisic is 27, McKennie 27, Adams 27, Richards 26, Robinson 28, Balogun 25 and Tillman 24. Despite some rocky pre-tournament results, which included a 5-2 loss to this same Belgium side four months ago, Pochettino has ultimately been vindicated with how his team have grown into the World Cup so far. Goals are expected once more, as our experts highlight in our USA vs Belgium prediction.

While the USA is thriving in this World Cup, Belgium has, at times, looked simply like surviving.

Belgium, on the other hand, is a team in transition. The golden generation that once promised so much is over, with a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup its crowning achievement.

Only a few core members from those years remain: Thibaut Courtois (34) is still an elite goalkeeper, but Kevin De Bruyne (35) isn’t the same playmaker that dominated the Premier League for a decade, while Lukaku (33) is mostly utilised as a super-sub these days.

There’s still plenty of talent in this squad with the likes of Doku, Tielemans and Trossard, but the team is highly erratic and you’re never quite sure which team is going to show up. This was on full display vs Senegal, where Belgium managed just 0.16 xG in the first half compared to their opponents 1.83 xG.

Matchup to watch: Balogun vs Trossard

Belgium players

Folarin Balogun and Leandro Trossard come into this Round of 16 match as the most in-form players for their respective teams.

Balogun’s influence has been immense, leading the scoring for the team with 3 goals. He became the first ever American player to score twice in the same match after his brace against Paraguay in the opening round. The reversal of his red card could prove to be decisive, especially if Balogun is able to continue displaying his lethal goal-poacher instincts.

Leandro Trossard 2026 World Cup stats:

  • Chances created: 16 (tournament high)
  • Expected goals: 1.6 (team high)
  • Goals + Assists: 3 (team high)
  • Dribbles per 90: 2.5

Trossard, meanwhile, has been Belgium’s most consistent creator and goal threat. He’s tied with Mo Salah for the most chances created in the tournament at 16. Trossard proved crucial against New Zealand, where he scored a brace, and against Senegal where he provided the assist on the Tielemans equaliser.

These kinds of clutch performances are what helped Arsenal to their first league title in 22 years and helped to secure a reported move to Besiktas next season for the 31-year-old.
