England’s place in the knockout stage may be within reach. However, Thomas Tuchel will know that his team must rediscover their cutting edge in their final Group L matchup against Panama to reignite the Three Lions’ belief ahead of the business end of the 2026 World Cup.

Lessons Learned From Ghana Stalemate as Panama Awaits

Group L at the 2026 World Cup will draw to a close tonight, and England will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they face Panama at MetLife Stadium after having their momentum halted by Ghana on Tuesday night in Foxborough.

The Three Lions left their meeting with the Black Stars disappointed, but the performance offered plenty of encouragement. While the goalless draw denied the 1966 champions the chance to secure top spot in Group L, it did underline their ability to control matches against well-organised opponents.

As discussed in our Panama vs England prediction, Thomas Tuchel’s side produced more than enough to claim all three points. Despite failing to find the target, they were able to sustain pressure for long periods, which is likely to be the case in this match as well.

Indeed, the underlying numbers suggest that England’s issue was not chance creation but conversion. Tuchel will therefore be demanding greater precision, more incisive movement around the penalty area, and improved efficiency from his side in the final third tonight.

Panama Aim to Frustrate England, but History Favours the Three Lions

As shown in our World Cup predictions, England will have fond memories of their last meeting with Panama on football’s grandest stage, but few expect a repeat of the free-scoring encounter that we witnessed in Russia eight years ago.

On that occasion, Gareth Southgate’s side romped to a commanding 6-1 victory in the group stage, with Harry Kane playing a starring role, scoring a stunning hat-trick. John Stones bagged a brace, and Jesse Lingard also got on the scoresheet to cap off a dominant display.

However, much has changed since then, as Panama has improved massively in recent years, following a philosophy centred on defensive organisation, discipline and collective effort that is expected to make life difficult for England in New Jersey.

Thomas Christensen will likely view Ghana’s performance against Tuchel’s side as a blueprint. By remaining compact and denying them space in central areas, Los Canaleros will attempt to frustrate one of the tournament favourites and look to capitalise on opportunities to counterattack.

Saka Start? Tuchel Weighs Up Changes in Attack

After England’s frustrating draw against Ghana, Tuchel revealed that he is considering “moderate” changes for the clash against Panama, while hinting that Bukayo Saka may be handed his first start of the tournament. Speaking to the media, the German said:

“I was not even sure if to do the full rotation . Maybe we would have. But I am not shy to do some rotation now. He (Saka) seems to be more and more ready, and will hopefully push, and then we will see what is coming. He is a top player. That’s why he is with us. We need him desperately, like every other player, in top shape and pushing.”

However, it is not only on the right flank that we could see changes tonight, as calls are getting louder for Tuchel to hand Marcus Rashford his first start of the tournament following two impressive cameos off the bench against Croatia and Ghana.

Anthony Gordon has started both matches for the Three Lions in this competition, but his selection is believed to be due to his greater defensive work rate. Given that Panama is expected to sit back and counter, Rashford’s directness and pace could be key to unlocking the Red Tide’s defence.
