New Face At The Dugout as Marseille Builds Towards New Era

Four weeks and five days have elapsed since the 2026 World Cup crowned Spain as its champion, and now the attention of those who live and breathe football shifts back to the domestic stage.

Across France, the football fraternity prepares for another season of drama and unpredictability as Ligue 1 returns to the spotlight.

Olympique Marseille and Strasbourg will headline the 2026-27 campaign this Friday night and our SportyTrader betting experts have already covered this blockbuster clash. You can find all football insights into this game in our Marseille vs Strasbourg prediction here.

Marseille finished in second place in the 2024-25 Ligue 1 season, earning a spot in Europe's top-tier competition, the UEFA Champions League, but couldn't replicate that finish in the previous campaign. Indeed, it was a turbulent period as they settled for fifth place with 59 points, 11 points shy of their previous season's tally.

That failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League accelerated the need for change in management at the Stade Vélodrome. Bruno Genesio is at the helm, replacing former head coach Habib Beye.

Genesio has deep knowledge of the French football landscape, having managed well-known teams such as Olympique Lyonnais, Stade Rennais, and most recently Lille OSC. His time with the Northern France outfit saw him average 1.79 points per match in 34 matches in charge (W18, D7, L9).

Across Bruno Genesio's three spells with Lyon, Rennes, and Lille, the 59-year-old has managed 299 league games and has a 160-60-79 record.

Bruno Genesio's overall record with the other three French teams:

  1. Olympique Lyonnais
  • Period: 2015-2019
  • Matches managed: 185
  • Points averaged per match: 1.84
  1. Stade Rennais
  • Period: 2021-2023
  • Matches managed: 124
  • Points averaged per match: 1.73
  1. Lille OSC
  • Period: 2024-2026
  • Matches managed: 99
  • Points averaged per match: 1.71

Les Phocéens have so far seen six players leave the club at the end of the season, including Mason Greenwood, who was among the league’s two leading scorers behind the Golden Boot winner and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The prolific stars left for Fenerbahçe and Real Club Deportivo de A Coruña, respectively.

He succeeds Gary O'Neil, who left the club to manage Ipswich Town in the Premier League. The 47-year-old Portuguese manager has signed a three-year contract with the club.

Despite the change in management, Strasbourg's blueprint for the upcoming campaign is simple and clear: a challenge for European places.

Last season saw them miss out on European football as they finished just outside the top seven, settling for eighth place in the table with 53 points, a point shy of claiming the Europa Conference League qualification spot.

Beginning the season with a match against Marseille is no easy feat, especially when they failed to win against this opponent in the previous campaign:

  • 26 September 2025: Strasbourg 1-2 Marseille
  • 14 February 2026: Marseille 2-2 Strasbourg

In fact, a closer look at their Ligue 1 record against this opponent has been underwhelming, to say the least, with one win in their last 21 matches.

Whether or not that record will continue to haunt them at the Stade Vélodrome remains to be seen, but Strasbourg will need to produce a near-perfect performance if they are to silence not the critics but the history books and begin the new campaign with a statement result.
