The opening weekend of the 2026-27 Premier League season brings us a London Derby, with Brentford taking on Tottenham Hotspur at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening. These sides conceded a combined 109 goals last season, which sees us leaning toward a high-scoring encounter here as our match prediction.
Following high-profile departures including that of Thomas Frank, many expected the Bees to struggle to follow up their 10th-placed finish from 2024-25 last term. However, under Keith Andrews, they defied those expectations, securing ninth place in the EPL standings, while missing out on European qualification only on goal difference.
After once again escaping relegation by the skin of their teeth last term, Spurs have a point to prove this season. Roberto De Zerbi is now at the helm, and the Lilywhites have opened their chequebook like never before this summer, splashing out over £200m to bolster their ranks in an attempt to return to the upper echelons of the EPL standings. Let’s get into the key stats!

Brentford - Tottenham: Form Analysis
After a 1-1 stalemate against Watford on August 1, Brentford reeled off four victories on the bounce in pre-season, scoring 17 goals, seven of which came in their 7-0 annihilation of Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend.
For the majority of last season, the Bees looked destined to secure European football, but just one win from their final 10 EPL games ultimately curtailed their hopes of continental competition (D7 L2).
However, this week’s hosts were tough to beat at the Gtech, having lost only three of their 19 league games at this venue last season (W8 D8). The last time they tasted defeat here was on February 21.
Brentford did not lose a single London Derby at home last season (W1 D5)!
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur had a very impressive pre-season, scoring 12 goals and going unbeaten in their seven matches (W5 D2), which included beating Chelsea 2-1 in the Sydney Super Cup.
The Lilywhites earned just 12 points from their final 10 league games last season (W3 D3 L4), including a final-day victory over Everton, which ensured that they maintained their top-flight status.
However, the one bright spot in an otherwise dismal campaign for Spurs was their away record, with 26 of their 41-point tally coming on their travels (W7 D5 L7) - the sixth-best away record in the top flight.

Brentford & Tottenham Squad Analysis
Igor Thiago had an excellent season for Brentford last time out and remains the central figure in their attack. The Brazilian netted 25 goals across all competitions and finished just five goals behind Erling Haaland in the EPL Golden Boot race.
The Bees’ marquee signing of the summer was Mamadou Sangare from Lens. The Mali international opened his account in the team’s routing of Frankfurt last week and should make his Prem debut alongside Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen in the hosts’ engine room here.
Brentford have two confirmed absentees for this season opener, with Sepp van den Berg out for at least another month and Antoni Milambo sidelined for the foreseeable future due to an ACL injury.
Micky van de Ven is a major doubt for Spurs this weekend!
The Dutchman did not feature in any of the Lilywhites’ pre-season squads since returning from the World Cup and was not seen in training during this past week. New arrivals Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke are expected to line up in central defence.
On a more positive note, De Zerbi received a few injury boosts in recent weeks, with Dominic Solanke and James Maddison returning to training, though both players are likely to have their minutes managed in the opening weeks of the campaign.
Spurs will have to make do without Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus, all of whom have been ruled out for this weekend’s trip to West London through injury.

Our Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction
After a record-breaking transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur should be targeting a much stronger campaign after back-to-back 17th-place finishes. However, with so many fresh faces arriving over the summer, it may take a few games for the squad to develop cohesion under De Zerbi.
Only Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Man City lost fewer home games than Brentford last term, and after a stunning end to pre-season, we feel the Bees’ attack will give their London rivals’ new-look defence a thorough examination in this one. Our Brentford vs Tottenham prediction is BTTS.
