A close match is likely between Zhihzen Zhang and Marcos Giron. They meet in the first round of the clay court Monte Carlo Masters. For the winner, there’s a second round match against either the 14th seed Ugo Humbert. Zhang is 48th in the live rankings and that’s just two places and 26 points behind his opponent. In the ATP Race, Zhang is only 97th, 49 behind Giron. This is his first clay court tournament of the year and he’s not been in good form in recent weeks. Four of his last five matches on hard courts have ended in defeat. He’ll hope for some good results on clay and last year did get to the last eight in Madrid. This is his first time in this tournament. He leads Giron 1-0 in previous meetings but that was on a hard court seven years ago.

Marcos Giron Is in the better form of these two players. Last week saw him get to the last eight of the US Clay Court Championships. That included beating Denis Shapovalov and J J Wolf before losing to Luciano Darderi. He’s also had some good results on hard courts this year. The American lost in the Dallas final and the semifinals in Delray Beach. The last two years have seen him get to the third round at Roland Garros but he’s yet to win a match here. We believe that will change on Tuesday and he can beat Zhang.
