World number 74 Jakub Mensik makes his debut in the Madrid Masters. He takes on Yannick Hanfmann in the first round of this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 tournament. For the winner there's a tough match in the next round against ninth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov. Mensik is playing his first clay court tournament of the year. The 18-year-old has had some success on this surface though with two clay court titles won on the Challenger Tour. It's been a good year for him so far with an appearance in the final of the Doha hard court tournament. His only previous match against Hanfmann was on the Challenger Tour two years ago. Hanfmann won that match but it was played on a hard court. 

Yannick Hanfmann is rannked 58th in the latest list but is down at 85th in the ATP LIve Race. The German has reached one clay court quarter-final this year. That was his first of the year in Cordoba on the South American clay court tour. He didn't beat anyone in the top 85 before losing to Luciano Darderi who was ranked 136th at the time. He's been inconsistent since then and only got into the Monte Carlo main draw as a lucky loser and then lost in round one. Last week lost in the last 16 of the BMW Open to the then world number 223 Marc-Andrea Heusler. That's not inspiring form and we tip Mensik to win this match.
