Venezuela take on Italy in the second semi-final of the World Baseball Classic. This is a huge opportunity for both teams with a first spot in the final for either of them up for grabs. Let’s break things down for a prediction.
It was a decent Pool stage for Venezuela, beating the Netherlands, Israel and Nicaragua before falling at the final hurdle when top of the group was on the line against the Dominican Republic.
They were hugely impressive in their quarter-final win over Japan, a surprise to many, but Japan were not close to their best in this tournament. Still, it is a win that can’t be taken away from Venezuela and in theory, Italy are a far inferior opponent.
It would be folly to completely underestimate Italy as they are on a serious high through this tournament. They were made to sweat a little bit late on in their quarter-final against Puerto Rico, up 8-2 going into the 8th before Puerto Rico put up a four spot.
Italy’s win over the USA in their Pool game was arguably the moment of the tournament so far, That seems to have given them all the momentum they needed to get to this point, one game away from the final.
