Venezuela’s quest for a place at the 2022 World Cup took yet another dent as the team fell 3-1 to Brazil on Match Day 10. That defeat left them rooted bottom of the standings with four points and will next be hosting third placed Ecuador who have 16 points. Venezuela led for long periods against Brazil, after taking an 11th minute lead, and it felt like they’d get the second win of the qualifiers. However, it all crashed in the final 20 minutes as they conceded three goals, leaving them winless in the last 10 matches. It was also their 10th loss in 14 matches, a run in which they have just one win and they get to this game having kept only two clean sheets in 15 matches. Venezuela have drawn each of their last three matches against Ecuador, including at the Copa America in June but they lost 3-0 in their last meeting in World Cup qualification. In the last four World Cup qualification matches, Venezuela have suffered straight losses.

Ecuador took advantage of Uruguay’s draw with Colombia and leapt back to this place after a 3-0 win over Bolivia. Now they face a side below Bolivia and though they play away from home, they’ll be expected to walk away with three points. In these qualifiers, the win over Bolivia was their fifth in 10 matches, a run way better than Venezuela’s. They have three clean sheets in their last five matches and have scored two or more goals in five of their last 10 World Cup qualification matches. It is their away form that needs addressing, as they head here winless in six away matches across all competitions, while they have also suffered six losses in their last 10 away matches. In World Cup qualification, Ecuador have lost nine of their last 11 away matches, and have no clean sheet in 12. Both these teams have scored in five of their last six meetings.
