Varvara Gracheva and Tatjana Maria, both unseeded, will battle in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championship. The winner will then advance to play either Elina Svitolina or Anhelina Kalinina next. Varvara Gracheva is having a slow start to the year and at the moment is on a losing record. She has lost five times in nine outings but a positive note is that all her wins have come on hard courts. Having defeated Maria twice in three meetings, the Frenchwoman will be confident of a winning start here. Gracheva, who is down to 49th in the live ranking, is making her second appearance in Dubai. She has lost her last three matches and is coming off a first-round exit in Doha.

Tatjana Maria is also having an unconvincing start to the year. The German has compiled a 4-5 record thus far with the majority of her wins as well as losses coming on hard courts. Maria was also eliminated in the first round in Doha in her last outing. She has lost her last two fixtures and has dropped two places to 52nd in the live ranking. Maria’s sole win over Gracheva came on a hard court in Cleveland last season. The 36-year-old was forced to retire in the first set the last time she squared off with Gracheva. This was last October at the Billie Jean Cup.
