Uruguay didn’t have the best start to the Copa America tournament but finished their group matches strongly and will be looking to keep the momentum when they face off with Colombia in the quarters. At the close of the first stage, Uruguay sat second in Group A with seven points while Colombia finished third in Group B with four points. After initially struggling in attack, the return from suspension of Edison Cavani boosted Uruguay, and the fact that he has scored in the last two matches points to his importance in the team. Luis Suarez was awarded a scrappy goal in the draw with Chile and the two forwards will hope to provide the incision needed in attack. Uruguay lost to Argentina in the opening game at the competition, but recovered with a second half goal to draw 1-1 with Chile. Two wins, and as many clean sheets, against Bolivia and more recently, Paraguay, completed their turnaround and they’ll have the better form in the quarters. They have one loss in their last six matches, with four clean sheets in the process, and they’ve scored in each of the last three matches.
Unlike Uruguay, Colombia started the tournament strongly, but lost their footing along the way. They started off with a 1-0 win over Ecuador then drew 0-0 with Venezuela and ahead of this, they are coming from two straight losses, against Peru and Brazil. They were 12 minutes away from a win over Brazil in their last game, after taking a 10th minute lead but a late collapse saw them lose 2-1. As a result, Colombia are winless in their last three matches and have managed just one win and two clean sheets in their last five matches. They’ve failed to score in just two of their last 10 matches though, and they’ll still have that threat, with Luis Muriel, Daniel Zapata and Luiz Diaz in the squad. Both sides have scored in three of their last five matches.
