Ukraine had a great result in their opening game of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Europe, drawing 1-1 with France in Paris. Now they can plot for three points as they welcome Finland for Match Day 2 in Group D. While their goal against France in the 1-1 draw was a fortuitous own goal, they’ll still take the credit for pushing the world champions. However, Ukraine still remains winless in four matches; they had three straight losses prior to their game against France, and they’ve conceded two or more goals in three of their last four matches. They have one win in the last eight matches and six losses, and in the last 10 matches they’ve managed just one clean sheet. It is however a stark contrast at home; they have a fine run back home, which has only one loss (against Germany) in the last 12. Switzerland, Spain and Portugal are among the teams Ukraine have beaten at home and they have seven clean sheets too in those 12 matches. In the last 10 World Cup qualification matches at home, Ukraine have seven wins, seven clean sheets and just one loss. They’ve scored two or more goals in five of their last 10 World Cup qualification matches at home.

Finland, on the other hand, are coming from a 2-2 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina and they will have themselves to blame for failing to secure all three points. They came from down to lead 2-1 but lost concentration in the last five minutes and their visitors punished them and they’ve now conceded five goals in their last two matches. This should be a concern, especially given they are going to play a side so good at home. In attack, Finland have a big threat though. Norwich forward Teemu Pukki has carried his club form to the national team and he scored the two goals against Bosnia. He now has four goals in Finland’s last three matches and he will be the man relied upon for more in Ukraine. Finland have had great times in recent years and they will also be taking part in the Euro 2020 finals. Their away form has also improved and going here they have three wins in the last five away matches. They only need to improve on their performance in World Cup qualification away matches, where they have four losses in the last six matches.
