Both Wales and Turkey were outplayed in their opening fixtures at Euro 2020 though Wales managed to rally and win a point as Turkey were well beaten. Wales drew 1-1 with Switzerland as Turkey lost 3-0 to Italy. Now the two sides face off hoping to take control of their destinies as far as the competition is concerned. Turkey were completely outmuscled by Italy and to stay in this competition, they can’t afford another loss. In their opening game, they failed to register a shot on target but seeing that Wales are much weaker opposition should motivate Turkey. They will enjoy some good support in Baku and should be able to restore their earlier performance, having gone unbeaten in the six matches before the loss to Italy. That defeat was the second time in seven matches that they failed to score and having scored two or more goals in five of the seven, they’ll want to be more explorative against Wales. Burak Yilmaz was isolated in a one-man attack against Italy but Senol Gunes will definitely go for a lesser defensive approach and add focus on the attack when facing Wales.
Wales came from behind to draw with Switzerland and should have been satisfied by the result, and not their performance. They were dominated in the game and only managed a point because of wastefulness from the Swiss. Rob Page’s side has just one loss in their last five matches and will be confident enough of handling Turkey. With their final game in this group against Italy, Wales will want to get as much as they can from this clash. With a scoring run that has seen them hit the net in six of their last eight matches, they have the needed quality. The manager has already indicated there could be changes for the second game but while he has Harry Wilson among his options, there’s little likelihood he will swap him with Kiefer Moore, the scorer of the equalizer against Switzerland. One constant here is that both teams will go to this game hoping to win after their winless outings in the opening games. Turkey are in a worse position after the heavy loss to Italy and we expect a change in formation for this game. Wales will also be making changes, maybe in attack, while hoping for a better defensive output than in the opening game. Turkey have a better scoring rate, though they aren’t really great defensively, while Wales have struggled a bit in attack but have managed a good number of clean sheets going here. Somehow, these teams cancel out, which gives more sense why a draw is the most probable outcome.
