15th-seed Tommy Paul faces Francisco Cerundolo in round three of the outdoor clay court Madrid Masters. Cerundolo is seeded 21st but is the favorite to win this match. Whoever is the victor faces a last 16 match against either either fourth seed Alexander Zverev or unseeded Denis Shapovalov. Paul is ranked 16th in the latest rankings and also holds that position in the Live ATP Race. The American beat qualifier Lukas Klein in round two but had to come from a set down to get the win. He's had a strong year on hard courts this year with one title won and another final reached. Paul isn't so successful on clay though and this is his first time past the second round in Madrid. He's never done that in Roland Garros though. He's 2-2 in previous meetings with Cerundolo but this is their first meeting on clay. This is his first tournament since suffering an ankle injury in Miami last month.

Francisco Cerundolo has a better record on clay than his opponent. The world number 22 is up a place in the live list after beating Fabian Marozsan in straight sets in round two. The Argentinian is up to 36th in the ATP Live Race. His year began poorly with only one of his first four matches being won but they were on hard courts. When returning to clay he still struggled but found his form again when making it to the last four in Rio. He lost in his first match in Houston but got to round two in Monte Carlo and took Karen Khachanov to three sets.
