Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev begins his Shanghai Masters campaign with a second round match against Thiago Seyboth Wild. Medvedev was given a bye into round two of this hard court tournament. Here's our match prediction.
Medvedev is the world number five but a place higher in the Live ATP Race. He's yet to confirm his place in the end-of-season ATP Tour Finals but a good run in Shanghai would book his spot.
It's October and the Russian is yet to win a singles title this year. Last week saw him beaten in the semi-finals of the China Open by eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. He's had one previous match against Wild and he was beaten in five sets on the clay of Roland Garros last year with two tie-breaks being played.
The winner of this match will face either 29th seed Matteo Arnaldi or qualifier Zach Svajda. Thiago Seyboth Wild is at 88th in the latest rankings but up eight places in the live list after his first round win in Shanghai.
The Brazilian defeated qualifier Dan Evans to get through to round two. He needed three sets to get the win though, dropping the middle one. A third-set tie-break was needed to secure the win and avoid a third successive defeat.
His two previous matches had been lost but they were both Challenger Tour events played on clay. He made the final in Bad Waltersdorf but didn't get any wins over any top 100 ranked players.
This is his first hard court tournament since a first round loss to Andrey Rublev at the US Open. He's yet to reach a hard court quarter-final this year. We go for over 18.5 games to be played in this match.
