There had been many worries before the start of this tournament over just how far the hosts Russia would go in the 2018 World Cup. There were fears they might not even make it out of their group but those opinions were made totally redundant when they won their first two games with ease.Wins over Egypt and Saudi Arabia and eight goals being scored had their fans dreaming of going deep into this World Cup but then ceme Uruguay. Russia couldn't cope with them and lost 3-0 taking them down to second place in Group A.  Regardless of where they finished in their gorup, the last sixteen was always going to be difficult with Spain and Portugal their possible opponents. Spain proved to be their opponents and judging on how they played against Uruguay, this may be the end of the road for the Russians.

Spain finished top of Group B but only won one of their three games. They opened with a titanic 3-3 draw with Portugal, a game they would have won but for that brilliant Ronaldo goal right at the death. That draw was followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Iran and then they had to rely on a late goal to get a point against Morocco. That kept their unbeaten run intact and they go into thie game undefeated in their last 23 games with the last loss being when knocked out of the European Championships in 2016. They aren't quite firing on all cylinders at present but showed just how good they can be in the opening match with Portugal. The hosts have to bounce back from the loss to Uruguay and that has indicated they aren't quite at the level needed to go deep into a tournament so go for Spain to get the win in this match to reach the last eighl.
