Southampton have the chance to make their season work, at least on the tournament front, when they host Newcastle United in the first leg of their League Cup semi final. These two are having completely different seasons and at St. Mary’s, Newcastle will start this game as favorites. Southampton are coming from yet another defeat, 1-0 to Aston Villa, which left them bottom of the league standings. However, in their last game in this competition, they eliminated favorites Manchester City and they will be targeting the same here. Their 2-0 over Manchester City marks their only clean sheet in the last five matches, while they have three wins in the five games. They’ve failed to score in two of those five matches but in three of the last four, they have scored two goals each, with James Ward-Prowse scoring three times. At home this season, things haven’t worked well for Southampton; in 13 matches, they have just three wins, though two of these wins were in the League Cup.

Newcastle United are coming from a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League, which marked their third winless outing in the last five matches. They earlier lost to Sheffield Wednesday, in the FA Cup and drew with Arsenal in the league. One of their two wins in the last five matches is the 2-0 victory over Leicester City in the League Cup. Their other win, a 1-0 victory of Fulham in the league, was a labored one and they will hope for a smoother outing here. They haven’t scored a lot of goals recently, but haven’t also been conceding much. Four of their last five matches have had under 2.5 goals with Newcastle keeping four clean sheets in four of the last five matches, and failing to score in two of five. Still, they come into this game unbeaten in the last three games but they have scored more than a goal in just one of their last five matches. The loss to Sheffield Wednesday is the only defeat they’ve taken in from their last 19 matches.
