Third seed Cori Gauff and 26th seed Sorana Cirstea will face off in the semi-finals at the Italian Open. Their fourth career meeting is also their third match this term, and our prediction is for Gauff to win.

Sorana Cirstea is having quite the run in the Italian capital. It is the first time she has advanced this far at this event, and she has done so producing some outstanding performances. The Romanian, who has dropped just one set so far, defeated Jelena Ostapenko in straights in the quarters.

She has defeated two seeded players so far, with one of them being top seed Aryna Sabalenka. Cirstea’s third round victory over Sabalenka was her first-ever triumph over a WTA world number one.

Now with a 10-2 record on clay, the 36-year-old has shot up six places to 21st in the live rankings.

Cori Gauff will be wary of Cirstea’s form but will be confident in her ability to win this tie. The American has never lost against the veteran Romanian, winning all three previous duels.

All of their battles have been in major events in Melbourne, Miami, Madrid, and now Rome. Gauff defeated Cirstea three weeks ago as she made it to the fourth round in Madrid.

To set up their next showdown, the 22-year-old fought from a set down to oust the in-form eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in the last round. That win allowed her to continue a run of three straight semi-final appearances in Rome.

The world number four lost in the final in last year’s championship.
