Brazilian giants Santos are set to host Argentinian side San Lorenzo in the return leg of their third round Copa Libertadores playoff on Wednesday. Santos lead the tie 3-1 from the first leg and will be looking to finish the job at home. Their search for a fourth Libertadores title ended in defeat in the final last season at the hands of fellow Brazilians Palmeiras. This is another chance for them and should they see off San Lorenzo, a place in Group C awaits, where they’ll meet Boca Juniors, Barcelona and The Strongest. With the Brazilian league set to kick off in May, Santos are getting the best preps for this competition by participating in the regional Paulista A1 back home. They are unbeaten in their last five matches, having won three, and scored two or more in three in the process, but they have only one clean sheet. Their last loss in Copa Libertadores came in last season’s final; they head here unbeaten in three matches in this competition. In the three, they have no clean sheet, but two wins.

The first leg meeting between these two sides was the first since 2006. In the three meetings prior to this, Santos have won two and San Lorenzo one. The Argentine side is active in the domestic league and after a 4-2 away win over Platense, will be hoping to overturn a 3-1 deficit. One factor they’ll have to deal with first is their defence, having conceded two or more in three of the last five matches. They’ve been good in attack though, scoring two or more goals in three of the five. Generally, their recent matches have been high scoring, and they hope it can work in their favor here like it has been in their away matches. San Lorenzo are unbeaten in four away matches, winning the last two but it hasn’t been great in Copa Libertadores matches, where they have one win to show in their last three matches. In the second round, they eliminated Universidad de Chile with a 3-1 aggregate win but they are winless in six away matches in this competition, dating back to 2017. Former Chelsea forward Franco Di Santo will be the key man for the visitors. The striker, who also had stints at Blackburn Rovers, Wigan and Schalke, is on six goals so far in the season.
