Leipzig will open the new season with an away match at Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round of the DFB Pokal. Rot-Weiss, who play in the third tier of German football, will hope to pull the biggest surprise of the competition this early. Follow on for the preview and our prediction of the match.
In their last game, Rot-Weiss returned to winning ways in the 3. Liga, beating Hannover 96 II 3-1 away from home. That came after an opening 2-1 home defeat by Alemannia Aachen.
As they return to Essen for their second home game, Christoph Dabrowski will be hoping to engineer a major upset. The last time Rot-Weiss Essen faced a Bundesliga side, in 2020/21, they eliminated current champions Bayer Leverkusen.
The one-time DFB Pokal winners aim to replicate that season’s run which took them all the way to the quarter-finals.
Leipzig have been successful in this competition in recent seasons. They are eyeing a third DFB Pokal title in four seasons. Their two-season hold of the cup was halted last season after their elimination in the second round.
In the last four campaigns, they reached the final three times and lost once. With such a run in the cup competition, the visitors will feel confident they can go all the way once again. They’ve only lost once in the last 14 DFB Pokal matches.
However, with four clean sheets only in the last 10 matches in the German Cup, Rot-Weiss’ attacking threat is a concern. Their defending hasn’t been the best over the past few months but Leipzig will have unmatched firepower in this game.
