Group E gets underway on Monday afternoon and early evening, with all four teams playing two consecutive games. First up, at the Allianz Arena, Ukraine will face Romania in the opening game.
Ukraine came through as one of the trio of teams to earn a Euro 2024 finals spot via the Nations League playoffs. Sergei Rebrov’s team narrowly missed out on finishing second in their qualifying group, pipped on the head-to-head record by Italy.
They will face off against a Romania side that surprised many by winning Group I ahead of Switzerland, beating the Swiss to the top spot by five points. With Belgium likely to be the favourites in this group, the games between the other three teams will be crucial in deciding who makes the Round of 16.

Romania - Ukraine: Form Analysis
Ukraine comes into this game in excellent form, having only been beaten twice since the start of 2023. In that period, despite defeats to Italy and Poland, they have won eight other matches, drawing four, holding England, Germany (twice) and Italy in those matches.
After coming through the Euro 2024 Playoffs beating Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland by 2-1 scorelines to claim a spot in the finals, they drew with Germany early in June before losing away to Poland but in their last warm up game defeated Moldova 4-0 in Chisinau.
Having reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2020, where they were beaten comfortably by England, Ukraine will want to qualify from the group stage and manager Sergei Rebrov will no doubt be targeting his team picking up something from this game.
Romania manager Edward Iordanescu has overseen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for this Eastern European sleeping giant. After several lacklustre qualifying campaigns, improved form saw Romania surprise many by winning Group I ahead of the much-fancied Swiss. Going unbeaten in ten games, winning six and drawing four.
However, since a 1-0 win over Switzerland in their final Euro 2024 qualifying game, they have drawn three of the last four. All those draws have come at home against modest opposition in Northern Ireland (1-1), Bulgaria (0-0) and most recently Liechtenstein(also 0-0), and they went down to a 3-2 defeat when facing Colombia in Madrid in March.
With no goals in their last two games, manager Iordanescu will be hoping his team’s top striking talent can find their shooting boots ahead of this crucial opener with Ukraine.

Sergei Rebrov received some unwelcome news this week when Everton’s first-choice left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko picked up an injury that threatens to keep him out of their opening fixture against Romania. If Mykolenko cannot start, then Bournemouth’s Illya Zabarnyi is almost certain to replace him in the left-back slot.
Many fans will be keen to see the highly-rated Heorhiy Sudakov in action in this tournament. He will be surrounded by plenty of experience in midfield, including Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko and former West Ham striker Andriy Yarmolenko. Spanish-based duo Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk are expected to lead the line for Ukraine.
Romania coach Edward Iordanescu has a choice to make in goal where veteran Florin Nita could be edged out of the team by Atletico Madrid ‘keeper Horatiu Moldovan. There’s also a battle for a spot in attack with Denis Dragus and George Puscas competing for the sole central striking spot in the team.
Romania's key men in the tournament and this game are likely to be Spurs centre-back Radu Dragusin and their veteran attacking midfielder or striker, Nicolae Stanciu.

Both teams strengths come from a very well-organised defensive setup. Ukraine have the better attacking players, but the Romanian defensive unit is the better organised of the two. Data suggests goals could be at a premium here and as such a 0-0 or 1-1 draw looks the most likely prediction.

Having enjoyed an excellent season at Spanish club Girona where his 24 league goals saw him win the Pichichi Trophy, Artem Dovbyk will spearhead the Ukraine attack at the Euros this summer.
The striker is not only in form at club level, he has 10 goals in 28 caps for Ukraine, many of which have come as a substitute. He also netted the winner when the Ukraine defeated Sweden in the Round of 16 in the Euro 2020 tournament.
While I don't see too many goals in this game, if Ukraine are to score one, Dovbyk is a great choice to do so. So our secondary pick is Dovbyk to score at any time.

Given the importance of this game for both teams in a group that also includes Belgium and Slovakia, I can see both teams approaching this fixture with a view more not to lose, than to win.
First Group Stage games can be cagey affairs and I see this game being like that between two sides pretty well-matched in terms of quality and results.
