A journey that started in the Champions League qualifiers will see Scottish giants Rangers settle in the main draw of the Europa League. Rangers - Genk: Form Analysis
A poor start to the season sees Rangers playing in the Europa League instead of the Champions League. A number of Rangers’ faithful feel this, and a dismal run in the league should have seen manager Russell Martin shown the door already.
It was particularly painful conceding nine goals across two legs in the qualifiers. Amidst the disquiet, Martin managed to engineer a 2-0 win over Hibernian in the League Cup to end a five-match winless run.
If the recent Europa League campaigns are anything to go by, the manager might well buy himself some more time. Rangers have reached the knockouts in this competition in their last five appearances.
This is the first meeting between these two sides and also Genk’s first against Scottish opposition.
Genk will be looking to replicate Club Brugge’s success against Rangers when they meet. The Belgians are enduring a rough ride in the season so far.
They’ve managed only two wins in their opening eight matches domestically, leaving them in the lower reaches of the league. Genk didn’t have the perfect warmup for this match, losing 2-1 to Union Saint-Gilloise.
There is a stat the visitors will bank on here, which Rangers won’t like. In four of Genk’s five Europa League appearances, they won the opening match.

Rangers have high hopes for this game, but their targets may be affected by the fact they still have key players on the treatment table. This match comes too soon for Joe Rothwell, who has scored twice this season.
Rabbi Matondo isn’t expected back either and thus has no chance to add to his two goals last season. However, the right wing will be a key channel for Rangers, looking to make the most of James Tavenier’s form and versatility.
The defender can also operate as a winger and have lately had a great understanding with Djeidi Gassama on that flank. He has two goals to his name and will hope for a similar impact in this match.
Belgian Nicolas Raskin scored for Rangers in the League Cup and will be fired up for this game.
Japanese forward Junya Ito’s acquisition from Reims seems to be paying off early. After seven matches he has already scored twice, though both his goals came in defeats.
The visitors will be hoping for better luck with him in the team this time around. Meanwhile, as Rangers put a lot of importance on their right flank, the same will be the case with Genk.
Moroccan right-back Zakaria El Ouahdi has been key to their attack on that side and has scored four while assisting one goal in the league. The visitors hope he can carry that into this game.
