Portugal host Switzerland for the first round of the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament, in a group also consisting of Sweden and the Netherlands, given that Russia was disqualified following UEFA sanctions. This is also the reason why Portugal was allowed to enter the competition despite finishing third in their qualification group, meaning that they took Russia’s spot. Portugal are entering this tournament in good form. They are unbeaten in their last four, winning three and conceding just one goal in the process. Portugal however, has not ever won their opening game at a major tournament before. With current holders Netherlands and silver medalists in the Olympics Sweden, it is their only chance to contest a knock out spot. When it comes to the Portuguese team’s recent games, it is also worth noting that seven of the last eight finished with at least one clean sheet, with the team keeping four and drawing blanks in three.
Switzerland might boast a higher quality of players, yet are not entering the tournament in the best of form. Back to back friendly game defeats by England, Germany and Italy with an aggregate score of 12-0 have slightly shook their confidence. They managed to perform superbly in their qualification group however, finishing second behind Italy and conceding just four goals in their eight games. In a similar fashion to Portugal, they too have never won their opening game at an international tournament, yet will rely on star player Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic, who is in tremendous form and is worth a punt for anytime scorer in the game. Despite suffering heavy back to back defeats, Switzerland boast a relatively solid defence. Five of their last seven games featured Both Teams To Score No, while in the three times they have met Portugal, they have won twice and lost once.
