Defending champions Portugal had a nervy opening to the Euro 2020 campaign against Hungary but just managed to win in it with three goals in the final six minutes. They get to face former world champions Germany in their second game in Group F with the two nations separated by their fortunes in the opening games. As the holders thumped Hungary 3-0 in Budapest, Germany were at home in Munich losing 1-0 to world champions France. Portugal have their place among the giants in world football and taking on this German side that has lost its shimmer over the years should be quite manageable. The last time these two nations faced off was in the 2014 World Cup, and Germany beat Portugal 4-0. For the Portuguese, that marked a fourth straight loss to Germany but these two nations have had very different fortunes. Portugal are a much better side and coming here with three straight clean sheets and unbeaten in seven matches should give them the confidence. They will however be well tested here, with the only serious of their three straight clean sheets being against Spain. An aging backline that has veterans Pepe and Jose Fonte may not be good enough against Germany and Joao Cancelo being in isolation doesn’t make things easier.

Germany had very few open chances against France in their opening game and were lucky not to lose by a bigger margin in the game in Munich. They will still be there to take on Portugal and will hope playing on home soil comes with good fortunes. They were dominated by France and Mats Hummels, under pressure from Kylian Mbappe, turned the ball in his own net for the only goal of the game. As a result, they go to this game with one win in their last four matches, and they have no clean sheet in those four matches. France had two goals disallowed in Germany’s opening. Though they had no clean chance to test Hugo Lloris in the France goal, here it should be better as they’ll seek to exploit Portugal’s defensive issues exposed in the win over Hungary. Only three clean sheets in their last 10 matches is however a pointer to their own problems in defence
