Peru recovered from their opening 4-0 loss to Brazil at Copa America to go on a three-match unbeaten run in Group B of the competition. Now they are set to face Paraguay in the quarters, hoping to extend their good run as they seek a third Copa America title in their history, having last won it in 1975. In their last game, Peru outclassed Venezuela 1-0 with Saudi based Andre Carrilo scoring the all-important goal, which saw the team finish second in the group with seven points. It was his second goal in two matches and the widely traveled forward will be relied upon to deliver against Paraguay. Whereas this was Peru’s first clean sheet in 13 matches, there’s a lot to be picked from their last five games, having scored two goals in three of them. They were however the poorest in defence in their group, conceding seven goals in four matches.

Paraguay on the other hand, managed six points in Group A and finished third, after two losses and as many wins. In their last five matches, they’ve failed to score in three, and these were against formidable opposition – Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. They are coming from a 1-0 loss to Uruguay in their last group game. While they managed to score five times in two of their last five matches, they haven’t shown the sharpest of attacking instincts. They’ve also been culpable of slow starts to their matches, a trend that has seen them concede four times in the first half in the last five matches, and most of these goals have come in the opening 10 minutes. They have one clean sheet in their last five matches and haven’t beaten Peru in their last seven meetings, with Peru winning six of them. Paraguay get to face the in-form Andre Carrilo, who scored twice in their last meeting with Peru as the nations battled to a 2-2 draw in an October 2020 World Cup qualifier. Carrilo has three goals against Paraguay, having also scored against them in the 2015 Copa America and he is among the players to watch here.
