Newcastle will be spending the weekend hoping that Huddersfield and Reading have disappointing results. If Reading can win at Nottingham Forest, they will be just three points behind Newcastle and a win for Huddersfield over Fulham takes them to within four points and the minute Newcastle start playing Preston, they'll have a game in hand. United therefore need to get back in form and get a home win here or they could end up having to go into the play-offs. Just two wins in the last eight (both against relegation candidates) have seen their promotion bid stutter but this the Championship is full of inconsistent sides. That leads us to Preston who are down to 10th and no chance now of a play-off position. They lost 3-1 at home to Norwich on Easter Monday and that's three straight league defeats with three goals conceded in each of them. No wins in their last nine away league games and this looks the perfect opportunity here for Newcastle to get three valuable points.
