Saturday in Major League Baseball sees a doubleheader between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. We’ll be covering the first of these back-to-back games which will be the third in a lengthy five-game series between the two NL East rivals. This is a big matchup for the two teams with the Braves closing the gap on the Mets as they look to take over the top spot in the division. As things currently stand, the Mets’ 67-39 record is the second best in the entire NL and puts New York 3.5 games ahead of their opponents today in the division. The defending champions Atlanta boast a 64-43 record, third best in the National League, and can narrow the deficit to only a half game if they manage to win the remaining three games.

38-year-old, three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer takes the mound for the home team, making his 15th start of the season. The righty has been excellent this year with a 7-2 record and sporting one of the best ERA marks in the league at 2.13. He’ll come up against 28-year-old lefty Max Fried who is having an excellent season as well. Fried is coming off his first All-Star selection and will be looking to build upon his 10-3 record and 2.58 ERA. Atlanta has gone 2-2 in Fried’s last four appearances on the hill while the Mets have won four of Scherzer’s last five starts.

Our New York Mets vs Atlanta Braves Prediction
We’re going to back the New York Mets to win the first game of this doubleheader. Two very good pitchers face off with Scherzer and Fried but we give the slight edge to the Mets. Scherzer has been even better when pitching at Citi Field and sees his ERA drop slightly to 2.08 from 2.13. Doubleheaders can certainly be tricky to bet as lineups are subject to change but as things stand right now, the Mets look a good proposition to take the first game at these odds.
